Seminar at DISEG: Structural Health Monitoring and Impact Force Identification of Ferry Quays and Dock Bridges - Dr. Luigi Sibille

On February 6th, 2026, the DISEG Department will host a seminar by Dr. Luigi Sibille on “Structural Health Monitoring and Impact Force Identification of Ferry Quays and Dock Bridges”.
Ferry quays are key components of Norway’s transport network but are exposed to harsh marine conditions and repeated docking impacts. Increasing ferry size and traffic demand require a deeper understanding of their structural behavior.
The seminar will present the long-term SHM system installed at the Magerholm ferry quay, one of the first permanent monitoring deployments on this type of infrastructure. The talk will cover:

  • the practical installation of the SHM system;
  • automated techniques to track modal parameters under changing environmental conditions;
  • the use of Digital Twin models for virtual sensing;
  • the characterization and estimation of ferry impacts using statistical approaches and advanced force identification frameworks integrated with DT models.
Dr. Sibille recently completed his PhD at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), after earning his Master’s degree at Politecnico di Torino and spending a research period at the University of Cambridge. He will soon begin a postdoctoral appointment at Princeton University, focusing on AI-driven form finding of structural surfaces under extreme loading.
Friday, February 6th, 2026 – 14:30, Aula Albenga (DISEG, entry 1, 2nd floor)
