    Abstract

    Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies have attracted the interest of the industry due to their potential for flexible and automated production of complex geometry objects, in combination with minimizing the time required to develop new products, where digital models are converted into physical objects through an additive process. According to a recent analysis, the total market for AM products is projected to grow annually by 18% by 2025. Although AM technologies are a structural part of digitized industrial production and therefore the 4th industrial revolution, Architectural, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Industry is reluctant to adopt such technologies, in the design and construction of structures like buildings, bridges etc. In addition, since the 80’s AEC industry has been a pillar industry, now its scale expands and its impact on the global economy is significant. Nevertheless, some issues are exposed to its rapid development, which contributes to a large amount of waste production, huge energy consumption, and severe environmental pollution. The recent Green New Deal for Europe sets as a primary objective the reform of heavy industry, including construction industry, which accounts for 40% of the energy consumed on the continent. The main tools for achieving this objective are to minimize both materials used during the production phase and the amount of industrial waste. The principal aim of the proposed Network is to create and test an holistic machine learning assisted optimum design-manufacturing process of civil structures by developing strong synergies among a multi-disciplinary team of academic experts and SMEs from Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Netherlands and Spain. This will be achieved taking advantage of ongoing progress in AM technologies including recycled consumables. The functionality of a product can be maximized through AM as its geometrical characteristics and construction material are not subject to the numerous restrictions imposed by conventional production methods. According to a recent analysis, the total market for AM products (metals and polymers) is projected to grow annually by 18% by 2025. Although AM technologies are a structural part of digitized industrial production and therefore of the 4th industrial revolution, Architectural, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Industry is reluctant in adopting new technologies, AM included, in the design and construction of structures like buildings, bridges etc. In addition, since the 80’s AEC industry has been a pillar industry, now its scale expends and its impact on the global economy is significant. The objective of the proposed research project is to develop a comprehensive methodology for the design of optimized steel and concrete structures that will take advantage of ongoing progress in additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies including recycled consumables. Contributing among others to the great challenge becoming Europe the world's first climate-neutral bloc by 2050.The principal aim of the proposed Network is to create and test methodologies for the application of optimization techniques in different design phases of civil structures by developing strong synergies among a multi-disciplinary team of academic experts from Cyprus, Greece, Germany, Italy, Spain and Jordan and SMEs from Belgium, Greece and Netherlands.
